Painting and decorating in Berlin

High ceilings, stucco roses and doors under many coats of gloss make Berlin period buildings both beautiful and demanding. Our Berlin team handles paint, wallpaper and lacquer in flats, offices and on facades.

What matters in Berlin

In the late nineteenth century quarters of Charlottenburg, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, rooms are much taller than in new builds, so mobile scaffolds and more material must be planned. Many ceilings still carry old distemper, which has to be washed off completely before repainting because nothing will adhere otherwise. Stucco, double box windows and panelled doors call for patient lacquer work. In the prefabricated blocks in the east of the city, concrete walls and joints define the substrate. Street facades in many neighbourhoods suffer from graffiti, and offices in Mitte are painted while work carries on.

Jobs in Berlin and Brandenburg are carried out by our regional painting team, scheduled from the head office in Essen. At the site appointment we check which old coatings exist, how sound the plaster and stucco are and what access there is for scaffolding or materials. You have the same contact person throughout, who also informs the property manager and neighbours when the stairwell or courtyard is used. If flooring, electrics or the bathroom are done in parallel, our divisions work hand in hand. The quote is free for you and without obligation.

Focus areas

Typical jobs in Berlin

  1. Spotting and removing distemper

If the ceiling chalks when you wipe it, old distemper is usually the reason. We wash it off, prime the plaster and only then build up a durable new coating.

  2. Stucco, doors and box windows

Mouldings are painted by hand, not filled in. We sand or strip old lacquer so that edges stay crisp and window sashes close cleanly again after painting.

  3. Facades and graffiti

We remove graffiti in a way that suits the substrate, repaint plinth and ground floor in the original shade and, on request, apply a protective coat that eases future cleaning.

  4. Renovating while the office runs

Agencies and law firms in Mitte or Kreuzberg get low-odour paints, agreed work phases and evening or weekend shifts, so that desks remain usable.

FAQ

Frequent questions from Berlin

Your question is not listed? Call us or send us a message – we answer personally.

Do I have to paint when I move out of my rented Berlin flat?

That depends on your tenancy agreement, and many older clauses on decorative repairs are invalid according to case law. A tenants association or a lawyer can give a legal assessment. Once it is clear what is owed, we paint the flat in neutral shades and record its condition with photos for the handover.

How do you paint rooms with very high ceilings?

For period ceiling heights we use mobile scaffolds instead of ladders, because ceilings and stucco can only be worked evenly and safely that way. Furniture is moved to the middle of the room and covered, floorboards and parquet are fully protected. The extra effort for area and set-up time is shown clearly in the quote.

Do you also work outside the Berlin city area?

Besides every borough, our Berlin team also covers Brandenburg. We paint detached houses in Potsdam, Kleinmachnow or Falkensee as well as housing estates and commercial properties further out. The site visit takes place at your premises, and for facades we settle scaffolding and vehicle access at the same time.
